In our continuing Lenten series, today we invite you to consider fasting from judging others, and feasting on seeing the Christ in them. This requires us to overlook the superficial details of what seems to separate us one from another, and to celebrate what we have in common in the midst of diversity. How to do this? We suggest that getting to know someone, being present with them, is the most direct way. Can there be any greater joy than recognizing Christ in another, and is not this what we promise to do in our baptismal covenant? Join the conversation, make comments, share this with others, and above all, have a most Blessed Lent. [Note about the thumbnail graphic: consider the diverse colors, shapes and designs of flowers, each one unique even in the same species…yet together they form a marvelous celebration of a common life…much as we can experience when we see the Christ in everyone.]
Over twenty years ago someone heavily involved in prison ministry told me that, when she interacts with someone whom she doesn’t like, she asks God in prayer to show her how she is like that person. God never failed to directly answer her prayers in these matters. I have prayed that prayer myself numerous times since then and God has never failed to directly answer it for myself either.
Theresa, I love this wonderful and practical example. What an appropriate reminder of the power of prayer when we ourselves are not exactly at our best. Thanks for your comment.
